Building a Theatre Company’s Digital Identity from the Ground Up

How We Helped Mythography Stand Out Online – A Developer’s Perspective
Hi, I’m Joe, co-founder and lead developer at ContentFlo.
And this is the story of how we partnered with Mythography, an emerging theatre company based in Edinburgh, to design and build a bold, dynamic and memorable website that now ranks #1 on Google for their name and acts as the digital heart of their company.
The Challenge: Creating a Unique Online Presence for an Emerging Theatre Brand
When Philomène Cheynet, co-founder of Mythography, reached out to us, her vision was clear:
“
We needed a site that matched our ambition—something professional, dynamic and distinctly us.
” – Philomène Cheynet
Mythography was going through an evolution, moving from a grassroots performance collective into a full-fledged theatre company ready to make its mark in the industry. But to do that, they needed a credible, high-impact website not just to showcase their work, but to capture who they are.
The site would serve as:
- A portfolio for past productions
- A promotional hub for upcoming shows
- A first point of contact for funders, press, collaborators and audiences
- A dynamic content platform they could update on the fly
Design Goals: Bold, Memorable, Theatre-Inspired
From day one, we knew the visual design had to be as bold as the performances they put on stage. We leaned into:
- High contrast visuals
- Expressive, theatrical typography
- An editorial feel that gives their productions the stage presence they deserve
The homepage was designed like a curated portfolio, featuring scroll-triggered animations, production imagery and teaser content, giving visitors a sense of both history and momentum.
Philomène told us:
“
We didn’t want to blend in with other companies. We wanted something that people would remember and feel excited to explore.
”
Development: Building a Flexible & Future-Proof Platform
While the design made an impression, the backend had to be just as robust.
We built a custom content management system using PayloadCMS that was designed specifically for non-technical users.
Some of the key features include:
- Drag-and-drop content blocks (text, images, video, press quotes, etc.)
- Modular sections to create pages with different layouts and storytelling styles
- SEO fields baked into every page
- Fast-loading performance across all devices
This gave the Mythography team full control of their site without ever touching code.
“
The site just works. We can update shows, trailers and team bios without needing help. That freedom is huge for us
.”
– Philomène Cheynet
SEO Wins: Ranking #1 on Google for “Mythography”
From launch, we implemented strong technical SEO:
- Clean URL structure
- Metadata on every page
- Alt text on all images
- Schema markup for structured data
- Image compression and lazy loading
As a result, the site now ranks #1 on Google for ‘Mythography’, making it the main discovery point for new visitors and theatre fans.
Results & Impact
Since launch, Mythography’s website has become:
- Their primary marketing tool
- The reference point for funding applications
- A go-to destination for press, collaborators and audiences
- A platform that grows as they grow
Their team now has a digital space that reflects their artistry and supports their operations behind the scenes.
Final Thoughts from the Dev Side
As a developer, this project was especially rewarding.
I wasn’t just coding, I was helping to shape a company’s public identity. I learned how to build for flexibility, how to support creative storytelling through structured content and how to keep performance at the core of every decision.
